Warren Muller is an American lighting sculptor who illuminates trash and found objects, with remarkable results.
I think the graters’ holes cast eye-catching patterns and shadows on walls and somehow the novelty of the lighting scheme sets the mood for something offbeat or creative to happen.
These pieces, especially the cheese grater reminded me of the images we were shown in a lecture by Jim Brogden, using a metal cutlery holder and a desk lamp to create different lighting effects...It just goes to show what you can create with ordinary objects...Its sometimes better not to look outisde the box.

I have heard of buckets being used as lamp shades but never graters, by the look of the photos, these create a great effect. I like the potential that this type idea has, the way things are lit can have so much impact. Also it does show as you said how much overlooked potential simple objects have.
the cheese grater is definitly interesting however will it not get extremly hot?
Lighting designs are always changing, people want to make them more of a feature in their room. Even looking through the lighting section in a John Lewis catalogue, you can see the extreme, different lights that are on offer. It is no longer about the light given off but all about the design.

I love the cheese grater image, fantastic idea. Not sure what my housemates (or the landlord come to that) will think if i start attatching cheese grater lamp shades to the walls though.
