Are we lovin' it?

From a print campaign advertising a new McDonald's opening soon near Kimaya Kothrud (India)

A little worrying I feel....I have recently been researching about advertising and how it has an affect on childhood obesity for my dissertation, and I came across this new campaign for a new McDonalds. There is no surprise that childhood obesity is rising rapidly. So are we now expecting that newly born babies are gonna be Ronald MacDonald fans! Will people ever realise the damage McDonald's causing to our health or will the next generation still be lovin' it?

This is rather horrible. In my opinion advertising to children should be banned especially if its promoting something that could have a negative affect on the consumer. This could well be a damaging statement, but it would be good to now what other people think.

Surely that ad must be a joke on the behalf of McDonalds? it just feels so out of sync with what they have been conveying recently in their ads, especially here in Sweden where they have been promoting the 'free choice' that the children get. Which means they can combine a burger with carrots and a fruitsallad and flush it down with milk, to create a 'healthier' choice for the kids. I'm not saying McDonalds is by any means a good choice for food, but it's interesting to see what types of different advertising they use in different cultures.

McDonalds does not increase childhood obesity or the chances of it. Eating there may do, however.
McDonalds is very popular largely because it is cheap and cheerful. Yes the food is full of sugar and additives and not very healthy, but as a treat for children now and again then what's the harm?
Surely the real issue here is educating people, especially the less well off, about nutrition and healthy ways of eating.
Is it not also the case that anything we do or buy has some sort of negative effect on us, especially if done to excess, it is up to the individual to decide.

This image to me is creepy and quite disturbing. I think that advertising to children should be regulated more especially those adverts concerning fastfood etc. which are still showing regulary on tv even with new laws. However, at the end of the day it is the consumers decision whether or not to eat certain foods and only by educating children from a younger age about the risks of junk food can help them to form there own opinions which will only benefit themselves later in life.

when i first saw it i thought it was quite funny, the off spring off ronald with the red hair and everything. Personally the disconcerting bit is that there is only half the body of the kid if you look carefully...but i agree it is mainly the parents to blame for the obesity because they are the ones who take there kids there and pay for the food for them, so bit of a vicous circle really.

Asides from the obesity issues, an interesting example of how a brand has gone about advertising to a different culture

This can't be an official advert for McDonalds? Surely as Martin states it really doesn't relate to their recent push on advertising campains promoting healthy eating. People need to be educated about healthy eating as although fast food used to be cheap (as Mike suggests) this seems to no longer be the case, thus suggesting that people make an informed (or uneducated) descision about where to eat and spend their money. This also suggests that advertising for brands such as McDonalds has to become stronger and more convincing, as the benefit of it being the cheapest place to eat is not necessairily there anymore.
